Another sign of impending military conflict with Russia?

In a move reminiscent of Cold War posturing, Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly purged the entire top brass of his Baltic fleet late last month following reports that the commanders had "refused to confront Western ships" in the region.

We first began hearing about the purge earlier this year after a Russian submarine crashed in the Baltic and a Russian commander attempted a cover up.

Russia's Defense Ministry said in statements that the men were being replaced for "dereliction of duty" and "distortion of the real state of things."

But details now emerging suggest that the purge of nearly 50 top military commanders in Russia could have more to do with the leader's desire to install a fighting force willing to counter Western actions in the region without reserve.

"Some hint that the 'buzzing' of USS Donald Cook by Russian Su-24 fighter-bombers on April 14, 2016 was meant to be part of a broader series of Russian confrontations against Western ships in the Baltic," international affairs analyst Peter Coates told The Sun.

"But the Russian Baltic Fleet in April, however, refused to follow such dangerous orders — hence Putin's retaliation against his own naval officers."

If that's the case, Putin is working to ensure that his commanders will quickly follow any orders to take the offense against NATO forces encroaching on Russian territory.

The Russian president, who has increasingly expressed disdain for U.S. actions in the region, says another situation like what occurred in Ukraine will not arise under his watch.
