// AVweb Top News

The crew of the TransAsia Airways turboprop that crashed in Taiwan in 2015 failed to follow procedures for an engine malfunction and then stalled the aircraft, investigators found. The Taiwan Aviation Safety Council's report, released Thursday, also confirmed previous reports that the captain of the ATR 72-600 shut down the working engine when the other failed just after departing the Taipei airport.

Hillary Clinton, what a mess

----
Hillary Clinton, what a mess
// Personal Liberty Digest™

The conclusion of the two-year GOP report on Benghazi illustrates how politically motivated delays got Americans killed. Newly released State Department emails have poked holes in the private server explanation. And a former Secret Service agent says she's a liar with anger issues. It's not Clinton's week.

"I understand that after two years and $7 million spent by the Benghazi Committee out of taxpayer funds, it had to today report it had found nothing, nothing to contradict the conclusions of the Independent Accountability Board or the conclusions of the prior, multiple earlier investigations carried out on a bipartisan basis in the Congress," Clinton said of the newly released Benghazi report.

"I'll leave it to others to characterize this report, but I think it's pretty clear it's time to move on," she added.

Well, let's characterize it briefly.

While the Obama administration claimed the Benghazi attack was an impromptu action sparked by anger over a YouTube video, we now know that it was a planned operation against the U.S. compound.

The administration also claimed that they did everything they could to respond to the attack in a timely manner. But the GOP report found evidence that the State Department actually wasted hours holding uniformed military to protect the U.S. lives because it was worried about upsetting Libya.

From the report:

What has … emerged is a picture of the State Department eating up valuable time by insisting that certain elements of the U.S. military respond to Libya in civilian clothes and that it not use vehicles with United States markings. Both restrictions appear to have been concessions to the Libyan government that did not want an identifiable U.S. military presence on the streets of Libya. We will never know exactly how long these conditions delayed the military response but that they were even a part of the discussion is troubling.

And at the same time the State Department appeared to waste time on what our soldiers would wear, it also appeared to waste time and focus on the YouTube video that the administration would later blame, falsely, for the attack. It has emerged that during an emergency call at 7:30 p.m. on the night of the attack involving Secretary Clinton and other high-level officials from the Department of Defense, State Department, and CIA that a full five of the eleven action items from the meeting related to the video.

Sure, the report didn't find any clear "wrongdoing" on Clinton's part. But it also illustrates that she didn't do a hell of a lot right either, which should raise serious concerns about her ability to respond to a crisis if elected commander-in-chief.

As for the new batch of State Department emails, they pretty much show that Clinton's clear intent in having a secret server was avoiding government scrutiny for certain actions while at State.

First of all, the new emails were only released thanks to a court order because of a conservative legal advocacy group's successful petition to have them made public.

As the AP noted: "The emails were not among the 55,000 pages of work-related messages that Clinton turned over to the agency in response to public records lawsuits seeking copies of her official correspondence."

These emails were among the thousands she deemed "personal" in nature. You know, the ones about yoga routines and dinner with Bill.

Among those deeply personal exchanges was this remark she made to top aide Huma Abedin: "I have just realized I have no idea how my papers are treated at State. Who manages both my personal and official files? … I think we need to get on this asap to be sure we know and design the system we want."

Sounds less like a matter of convenience than it does an attempt to make sure any damning evidence of a conflict of interest while at State never made it into public records.

Former Secret Service officer Gary Byrne, author of the new book "Crisis of Character," meanwhile, is making the rounds talking about the Clinton he knew when he had the misfortune of working for her in the White House.

During an interview with Fox, he said Clinton is a volatile person who isn't a fan of compromise.

"She gets angry at things that are policy issues that, you know, take time to fix, and she's got this attitude where she wants things fixed right now, immediately. She screams and yells at people," he said.

From what he observed, Byrne contends that the thought of Clinton running the country is terrifying.

"I feel so strongly that people need to know the real Hillary Clinton and how dangerous she is in her behavior. She is not a leader. She is not a leader," he said.

He also characterized Clinton as dishonest, saying, "She habitually lies."

None of this looks very good for Clinton—but, then again, it's probably just the work of that vast right-wing conspiracy.

// The Verge

The battle between Netflix and Amazon may go on for decades to come, but Amazon strikes a distinct blow this month as it wrestles control of a core film series away from Netflix: Star Trek — the old ones, I mean. Not the new ones you love to complain about.

But this month's film and TV additions aren't a total wash for Netflix. For one, it's picking up all seasons of Gilmore Girls worldwide (they've already been available in the US) to prep viewers for the new specials coming later this year. It's also picking up a pair of film series, Back to the Future and Lethal Weapon.

HBO, meanwhile, is debuting one of last year's biggest movie, Straight Outta Compton. It also kicks off the series The Night Of, which, if you're willing to put up with HBO's that's-so-2012 week-by-week release style, could be some great TV. HBO has no say in the Star Trek battle, which is probably for the best.

US Census may have missed 400,000 Hispanic kids [feedly]

----
US Census may have missed 400,000 Hispanic kids
// Futurity.org

In a recent comparison of Census Bureau data, researchers estimate that nearly 400,000 Hispanic children were not counted in the 2010 census.

It's a problem that could lead to less political representation and the loss of funding for critical programs aimed at early childhood wellness, according to a recent report.

"An accurate census is a fair one."

Investigators discovered the discrepancy in the count of Hispanic youth under the age of five after comparing the Census Bureau's 2010 Decennial Census and the Vintage 2010 Population Estimates.

While there is no clear agreement on the reasons for the staggering undercount, researchers have identified several potential causes that they hope will start a discussion on how to enhance the accuracy of the next census.

The decennial census, a report based on counts of people at their usual place of residence, was compared against the vintage estimates, which provide annual estimates based on births, deaths, and migration. The researchers focused on data for April 1, 2010, by subtracting the Vintage Population Estimates for the Hispanic population aged 0-4 from the decennial census count of the same population to arrive at the difference between the two: 400,000—what they refer to as the "undercount."

The 400,000 estimate is close to the entire population of the city of Portland, Oregon, according to Yeris Mayol-Garcia, a doctoral candidate at Penn State and coauthor of the report.

By using population statistics at the county level, the researchers also discovered that the undercount of young Hispanics was highly concentrated in counties within the states with the largest Hispanic populations in the US: California, Texas, Florida, Arizona, and New York.

Why it happened

Several factors may have led to this astonishing undercount, according to Mayol-Garcia. Hispanic children are concentrated in neighborhoods where it's often difficult to count people, such as areas with a high proportion of renters.

Hispanic children also are more likely to live in complex families where several generations, and subfamilies may be present. In some cases, adults may not know children are meant to be included in the count and others may also be reluctant to participate in the census if one or more members of their household are undocumented.

Where Americans live affects how long they live—if they're poor

In their report, the researchers caution that more work is needed to understand why such a significant portion of the young Hispanic population was missed.

"In all likelihood, the undercount is a result of a combination of these factors," Mayol-Garcia says.

The next round of the census

The next decennial census is slated for 2020, and may seem far off, but planning is already in the works. Mayol-Garcia believes additional steps to avoid undercounting need to be explored for implementation in the next round of the census; which includes more research and development of specific outreach campaigns.

Beginning outreach efforts early is key to developing networks that will reach households with young Hispanic children in time for the 2020 census. This outreach includes leveraging programs that already serve children, like the Woman Infant and Children Nutrition program (WIC), and encouraging health care providers and preschools to provide information to the families about the importance of making sure to include young children in the count.

Another route to explore for the future census is to improve the phrasing of questions concerning 1- to 4-years-olds, since a similar technique improved the undercount for children under the age of 1. "An accurate census is a fair one," adds Mayol-Garcia.

Child Trends Hispanic Institute, the Heising-Simons Foundation, the Annie E. Casey Foundation, and the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials Education Fund supported the research.

Federal Judge says he sees ‘no value’ in studying the Constitution [feedly]

----
Federal Judge says he sees 'no value' in studying the Constitution
// Personal Liberty Digest™

If you pay attention to conservative issues at all, you know that often the only thing standing in the way of a total progressive reformation of American law is the Constitution. And as American liberals become increasingly frustrated by constitutional roadblocks to their efforts to ban firearms and increase government power, they're looking for new ways to undermine and belittle the law of the land.

Advocates of a "living" judicial interpretation of the Constitution are nothing new. But with the Supreme Court's future hanging in the balance, the "loose constructionism" advocates among us are becoming more vocal.

In a recent op-ed for Slate, Seventh Circuit Judge Richard Posner made one of the boldest proclamations we've seen in a long time about the Constitution being outdated and in need of heavy modern interpretations.

Posner evidently sees so little value in the Constitution that he doesn't believe judges should even bother studying the document.

He writes: "I see absolutely no value to a judge of spending decades, years, months, weeks, day, hours, minutes, or seconds studying the Constitution, the history of its enactment, its amendments, and its implementation (across the centuries—well, just a little more than two centuries, and of course less for many of the amendments). Eighteenth-century guys, however smart, could not foresee the culture, technology, etc., of the 21st century. Which means that the original Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the post–Civil War amendments (including the 14th), do not speak to today."

That technology has outgrown the limits on government set forth in the Constitution is a favorite argument of anti-2nd Amendment fanatics and surveillance hawks alike. Firearms in the 18th century, they say, were far less capable than they are today and the founders would see them now as a threat to public safety if they lived today. Likewise, they assert that 4th Amendment protections against government snooping in digital communications are moot because it would have been way more difficult to plan terror attacks with simply "papers, and effects."

In fact, Posner has argued forcefully in the past for allowing government to fully annihilate Americans' privacy rights.

"If the NSA wants to vacuum all the trillions of bits of information that are crawling through the electronic worldwide networks, I think that's fine," he reportedly said in 2014.

"Much of what passes for the name of privacy is really just trying to conceal the disreputable parts of your conduct," Posner added. "Privacy is mainly about trying to improve your social and business opportunities by concealing the sorts of bad activities that would cause other people not to want to deal with you."

By continuing to honor the restrictions on government set forth in the Constitution, Posner argues that Americans risk letting "the dead bury the living."

Democrat lawmaker claims Constitution was intended to INCREASE government power [feedly]

----
Democrat lawmaker claims Constitution was intended to INCREASE government power
// Personal Liberty Digest™

Representative Jerrold Nadler, a New York Democrat, said it "really bothers" him when Americans argue the founders wrote the Constitution to give citizens the power to limit the size of federal government.

Nadler's remarks on the Constitution came during a House Judiciary Committee hearing regarding accusations that former IRS Commissioner John Koskinen made false statements during an inquiry into his agency's political targeting scandal.

The Democrat claimed the actual purpose of the Constitution was to increase government power, with the Bill of Rights being the only portion of the document intended to hamstring the government in any way.

"The Constitution was enacted to strengthen government power to enable central government to lay taxes and to function effectively. We put limits on that through the Bill of Rights, but the Constitution was enacted for the opposite purpose," Nadler said.

His remark was in response to former assistant U.S. attorney Andrew McCarthy assertion during testimony that the "principal purpose of the Constitution is to limit the power of government to intrude on the liberties and suppress the rights of the American people."

Nadler said he wanted to "correct the historical record" because "it really bothers me" when people claim the Constitution is about limiting government power.

If that's the case, James Madison must really put a burr under the guys saddle.

The father of the Constitution noted in Federalist 45: "The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined."

Secret Service agent: In White House, Clinton’s thought they controlled ‘magic royal pot of money’ [feedly]

----
Secret Service agent: In White House, Clinton's thought they controlled 'magic royal pot of money'
// Personal Liberty Digest™

A former Secret Service agent reveals how Bill and Hillary Clinton set about spending taxpayer money on as many lavish parties and favors as possible for political friends almost immediately after the former president's first election.

The damning reminder of the Clintons detachment from average Americans appears in former agent Gary Byrne's forthcoming book "Crisis of Character: A White House Secret Service Officer Discloses His Firsthand Experience with Hillary, Bill, and How They Operate."

"The Clintons believed that a magic royal pot of money somehow existed for their every whim," Byrne writes in a forward copy obtained by the Daily Caller.

According to the author, the Clinton's abuse of tax dollars began immediately after the Clintons were settled in the White House.

"As soon as Mr. Clinton became the president, Mrs. Clinton and her staff sought to repair the Clinton brand among groups they thought had been damaged during the campaign, scheduling galas, balls, and dinners," Byrne writes. "They hosted open house tours day and night, especially around Christmas and for the military. What she and her staffers failed to realize was that the White House had a budget like any other government entity. Each shindig still had to be paid either from the Executive Residence budget or the Democratic Party's purse."

And when the money wasn't there, the current presidential candidate would get angry. So her staff resorted to promising vendors they'd be paid to avoid Clinton's wrath.

"Early on, the staff kept promising payments but it was common knowledge that they had no idea of where they were coming from. But the buck kept getting passed because Mrs. Clinton didn't want to hear 'no,' and no one wanted to be the bearer of bad news. Evergreen was spoiled."

"Her doting, barely post-adolescent staffers resembled enabling, weak-willed parents," writes Byrne. "She threw massive tantrums. As her husband's term continued, those tantrums and her attitude toward us and various White House staff worsened."

Google search spike suggests people don't know why they Brexited [feedly]

Google search spike suggests people don't know why they Brexited
// The Verge

The United Kingdom — the country of my birth — has just voted to leave the European Union. The majority of the electorate has chosen to turn its back on the biggest political project in the world, a flawed but forward-thinking union that served as the only concrete symbol of European unity after the continent was torn apart by two World Wars. But why? According to Google, a lot of voters aren't really sure.

Google's Trends Twitter account reported an increase of 250 percent in people searching "what happens if we leave the EU," at around midnight British time, two hours after the referendum polls closed.

+250% spike in "what happens if we leave the EU" in the past hourhttps://t.co/9b1d6Bsx6D

— GoogleTrends (@GoogleTrends) June 24, 2016

The simple answers to that question have already been observed — the British pound plummets to a record low in value, the economy contracts, and the country's political parties scrabble around in the wreckage of the current Conservative government to dial back on ridiculous promises they made. But the real answers, the long-term results of ditching the EU in favor of nebulous ideas of "independence" and a new-found sovereignty, are wildly complex.

Arguably too complex for the average citizen. Referendums are a brute-force political engine, a numbers game designed to spit out a yes or no answer on a simple question. Something as complicated and multi-faceted as Britain's membership of the EU, on the other hand, should not have been decided by referendum, instead weighed up by independent experts versed in the thousands of ways the UK interacts with the biggest economic power on Earth.

But as the proponents of the Leave campaign repeatedly argued, UK citizens had apparently "had enough of experts." Instead the vote became about single issues, with one — immigration — at the core. Tens of millions of "incoming migrants" from Turkey and Syria were the specter with which pro-Leavers spooked the populace, using misleading figures and maps in canvassing materials despite the fact there was no possibility either country would join the EU. The Leave campaign has also kept quiet about the fact any favorable economic deal a Brexited UK would make with Europe would very likely see it accepting the same amount of incoming immigrants.

David Cameron didn't want to call the referendum

It would almost be impressive if British Prime Minister David Cameron had set out to tear apart the UK more effectively than any of his hundreds of predecessors, but the staggering fact is that he seems to have destablized the country entirely accidentally, sleepwalking off a cliff like a particularly posh Mr. Magoo. While Cameron promised a referendum on the issue of Europe, he never actually expected it to go ahead, counting on a less resounding victory in the last general election to force his Conservative government into a power-sharing arrangement.

Without a majority, Cameron's referendum could have been vetoed by his party's Liberal Democrat allies, but an unexpectedly weak showing for his Labour opponents gave Cameron and friends a mandate to do what they wanted — which, ironically, ended up being not what they wanted at all. After giving latent British Euroskeptic beliefs corporeal form, Cameron then did his best to battle the beast he'd brought about, campaigning hard for a Remain vote.

A spike in search traffic occurred two hours after the polls closed

Obviously, he failed, compounding his failure by presenting the bumbling Boris Johnson — a claimant for Cameron's Prime Ministerial position — as some kind of slick political genius, rather what he is: a man who looks like a haunted brush and who once got stuck on a zipline. Johnson was joined by Nigel Farage, the only British person to ever look uncomfortable holding a pint of beer, and a handful of a handful of British entrepreneurs. Their number included James Dyson, the inventor and vacuum cleaning magnate who long ago moved his operation out of the UK to Malaysia for cheaper labor costs, while the majority of the rest of the UK's tech leaders backed the Remain campaign.

The Leave campaign sported a smaller pool of celebrity and academic supporters — with some even calling into TV news stations to publicly distance themselves from a Brexit vote — but as the results show, that didn't seem to matter in the UK's decision to eject from Europe. As Google's search data shows, neither did an absence of facts.

Donald Trump praises Scotland for voting to leave the EU, but it didn't
// The Verge

Donald Trump praised the Scottish this morning for "[taking] their country back" in the UK's vote to leave the European Union. This is despite the fact that Scotland voted overwhelmingly to stay in the EU, with 62 percent of the population backing the Remain campaign. All 32 local authorities in Scotland chose to stay a part of the EU, but this wasn't enough to change the total outcome of the UK vote, which backed the decision to leave 52 percent to 48 percent.

Just arrived in Scotland. Place is going wild over the vote. They took their country back, just like we will take America back. No games!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 24, 2016

"Basically, they took back their country"

Trump is visiting Scotland to mark the opening of his Turnberry golf resort. According to Variety, he told reporters at the resort that Brexit was a "great thing," and added: "Basically, they took back their country." In a statement on Facebook, Trump said that the UK had "declared their independence from the European Union," and that come November, "the American people will have the chance to re-declare their independence" too.

Trump's praise for a Scottish Brexit might be misplaced, but it's at least an improvement on his previous position when he didn't seem to even recognize the term. When asked what his opinions on Brexit in an interview published this month, Trump stalled, responding only when the interviewer prompted that it was about "the Brits leaving the EU." Trump had made his position on the vote clear prior to this, but the commonly used term for the referendum was obviously a step too far.

Volkswagen will reportedly pay up to $10,000 to owners of emissions-cheating cars [feedly]

----
Volkswagen will reportedly pay up to $10,000 to owners of emissions-cheating cars
// The Verge

Volkswagen will pay between $1,000 and $7,000, and in some cases as much as $10,000, to owners of cars that were affected by the diesel emissions scandal, according to reports from Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal. The reports state that the payouts will vary depending on factors like the age of each vehicle, and each attributes the information to unnamed sources close to the ongoing talks — no surprise, considering that a gag order has been issued by the US District Judge who is overseeing the case. The deadline for the settlement decision is June 28th.

The decision to compensate owners of vehicles that were affected by the company's emissions-cheating efforts came back in April, though it was unclear at the time how much the individual payouts would be. It was rumored that they would be around $5,000 each, which — based on the fact that almost 500,000 two-liter engine vehicles were affected — would account for an almost $3 billion payout. But earlier this week Bloomberg reported that the total cost of customer payouts could be as high as $6.5 billion, a number that seems more in line with today's report.

Volkswagen isn't just on the hook for customer payouts — it's also expected to pay around $3.5 billion to the US government and regulators in California. But money isn't the only result of the fallout. The CEOs of Volkswagen and of Volkswagen USA have both been replaced, and the company has majorly shifted its focus toward electric vehicles.

A fix for the affected cars, however, is still in the works. Volkswagen submitted a proposal in November, but it was rejected by the California Air Resources Board earlier this year.

Town Goes All Out To Protect Dove Who Decided To Nest On Cop Car
// Neatorama

Towns are becoming known for some pretty strange stuff these days thanks to the internet, and until about two months ago the town of Parma, Ohio was known as the home of horrible Halloween decorations.

Thanks to a little visitor named Gerty, Parma is now known as the town that went the extra mile to help a mourning dove nest comfortably- even though Gerty was nesting on the hood of a cop car.

This Dove getting Parma police protection after laying her 2 eggs in a cruiser last wk. @cleveland19newspic.twitter.com/XOKqVtNdtA

— Julia Tullos (@JTullosCBS19) April 27, 2016

The Parma police department set up an umbrella to keep Gerty and her eggs dry, set out some water in a tiny cup to keep her hydrated, and they even dug up a few worms in case she got hungry.

The car is a back-up so hopefully they didn't need it before Gerty's eggs hatched in May, or else that's an obstruction of justice charge for Gerty!

There’s no good news for the 2nd Amendment in 2016 presidential politics [feedly]

----
There's no good news for the 2nd Amendment in 2016 presidential politics
// Personal Liberty Digest™

GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump is certainly no 2nd Amendment advocate's dream. In fact, I'm not at all uncomfortable betting he'd sign new gun control measures into law if elected.

Last week, Trump offered support for legislative actions to ban Americans placed on the government's no-fly list from purchasing firearms. This is a policy agenda that Hillary Clinton has also vehemently endorsed.

It shouldn't surprise you that both are on the same side of that particular issue, though. As I noted earlier this year:

Over the years, Trump has spoken out in support of so-called common sense gun control measures proposed by politicians on the left. And back in 2000, Trump blatantly stated his support for increased gun control measures in his book The America We Deserve.

"I support the ban on assault weapons and I support slightly longer waiting periods to purchase a gun," he wrote.

The problem with supporting a push for no-fly/no-gun laws is that anyone who's paid even a little attention to the controversy over the government's no-fly list in recent years knows that it is tremendously flawed and inaccurate.

As the American Civil Liberties Union pointed out last week: "[T]he standards for inclusion on the No Fly List are unconstitutionally vague, and innocent people are blacklisted without a fair process to correct government error."

The ACLU filed a lawsuit over the list in 2010 on behalf of "U.S. citizens and permanent residents who the government banned from flying to or from the U.S. or over American airspace."

"Our clients, among them four U.S. military veterans, were never told why they were on the list or given a reasonable opportunity to get off it," the ACLU said.

That both mainstream candidates support the idea of using this flawed list to bar people the constitutional right to bear arms is depressing. So, is there a better option?

Well, Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson's campaign says he is totally against using the list for the purpose of gun control.

"Gov. Johnson believes Second Amendment rights are too fundamental to be denied without due process, and being put on a list arbitrarily by the government is certainly not due process," Johnson campaign communications director Joe Hunter said in a statement to The Daily Caller.

That's good, until you consider Johnson's running mate, former Republican Massachusetts Gov. William Weld. His gun control record is abysmal if you happen to like the 2nd Amendment.

Here's a nice little summary from The New York Times, circa 1993:

Mr. Weld, a Republican who will run for re-election next year, called for a statewide ban on assault weapons — a proposal he opposed during his 1990 campaign — as well as a waiting period for buying handguns and a prohibition on handgun ownership by anyone under 21. His proposed legislation would also limit the number of handguns an individual could buy and would impose tough penalties for illegal gun sales and gun-related crimes.

"The purpose of this common sense legislation is to remove deadly guns from our streets and to take weapons out of the hands of many teens who themselves are becoming deadly killers," the Governor said.

Boy, that all sounds really familiar. It's unlikely that a Libertarian administration would pursue a gun control agenda (it's unlikely that we'll ever know, too). But Weld's recent excuse for his gun control shenanigans is still less than satisfactory.

"I was deeply concerned about gun violence, and frankly, the people I represented were demanding action," he said. "Sometimes, governing involves tough choices, and I had to make more than a few. Today, almost 25 years later, I would make some different choices. "

So what's a 2nd Amendment supporter to do?

Don't wait around to see who's going to be screwing up the country from the Oval Office by next year— start a healthy dialogue with your state and congressional representatives right now. Let them know gun control is non-negotiable if they want your vote. With statehouses and Capitol Hill packed with 2nd Amendment supporters, there's at least a chance the probable executive and judicial assault on gun rights ahead of us will be met with some balance.

Google employees are adding 'Lady' to their job titles to fight sexism [feedly]

Google employees are adding 'Lady' to their job titles to fight sexism
// The Verge

More than 800 members of Google's staff are standing together in a showing against sexism today by appending a single word to their job titles: "Lady."

Business Insider has details on the protest, which is happening in response to a ludicrous comment made during Alphabet's shareholder meeting last week, when someone referred to company CFO Ruth Porat as the organization's "lady CFO."

The internet immediately exploded in outrage over the sexist remark, and now, one week later, Google's staff has found its own way of responding. According to Business Insider, someone made the title change suggestion to an email group, and it quickly caught on. They launched an internal site to promote the protest, which was planned for this Thursday and Friday. It even got this awesome GIF featuring some of Google's newly proposed emoji:

Google

In a statement to USA Today, Meg Mason, Google's partner operations manager for shopping — or, for today, its lady partner operations manager for shopping — says of the protest, "I wanted to do something fun and 'Googley' that allowed us all to stand together, and to show that someone's gender is entirely irrelevant to how they do their job."

Women and men within the company are adopting the lady prefix, making the change over these two days in their email signatures and within Google's internal directory, according to Business Insider. It's a smart and simple response that, like Mason says, effectively conveys just how irrelevant gender is to being able to do your job.

Senator: Obama shipping thousands of illegals to rural America like a dictator
// Personal Liberty Digest™

Alabama Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions, a longtime critic of the Obama administration's open-borders immigration policy, says the president's practice of shipping thousands of illegal aliens to rural towns throughout the country is going to create big problems.

In an interview with the Washington Examiner's Paul Bedard, Sessions called President Obama's immigration amnesty policies "maddening" to average Americans.

"They feel like this is a dictator from Washington who will not listen to the people's concerns and they are very concerned about it," he said.

After denouncing Obama's immigration policies for the past several years, the Alabama politician recently learned that the White House is planning to send more than 2000 illegal aliens to his home state.

"What's happening in Alabama is happening this around the country and it is the result of idiotic policy cannot never work, that's encouraging more people to come illegally, and then we treat them, we house them, we feed them for months, and we release them basically on bail and then they just go where they wanted to go to begin with," he said.

Sessions, who's serving as an advisor to the Donald Trump presidential campaign, says he hopes the next president will be strong enough to reverse Obama's immigration damage and create a plan that wastes fewer taxpayer dollars.

"As long as you prolong this, the costs are incredible. Are we now going to build barracks and prison cells in Alabama? Hopefully with a strong president we won't need it because people will stop coming," said the senator.

Bolivia rejects 'offensive' chicken donation from Bill Gates [feedly]

Bolivia rejects 'offensive' chicken donation from Bill Gates
// The Verge

Bill Gates' philanthropic efforts are usually greeted with near-universal praise, but a recent attempt by the US billionaire to donate 100,000 chickens to impoverished countries has ruffled some feathers. The leftist government of Bolivia, one of the nations reportedly earmarked to receive the poultry, has refused the donation, describing Gates' gift as "offensive."

"He does not know Bolivia's reality to think we are living 500 years ago, in the middle of the jungle not knowing how to produce," said César Cocarico, Bolivia's minister of land and rural development, according to The Financial Times. "Respectfully, he should stop talking about Bolivia, and once he knows more, apologize to us."

Gates announced the chicken initiative — dubbed "Coop Dreams" — earlier this month as a partnership with Heifer International, a charity that aims to eradicate poverty by giving away livestock and agricultural training. The gift of 100,000 chickens is to be distributed among countries with high poverty levels: mostly nations in sub-Saharan Africa, but also including Bolivia, reports Reuters.

"if I were in their shoes, that's what I would do — I would raise chickens."

"It's pretty clear to me that just about anyone who's living in extreme poverty is better off if they have chickens," wrote Gates in a blog post. "In fact, if I were in their shoes, that's what I would do — I would raise chickens." He says that the animals are easy and inexpensive to raise, empower women ("because chickens are small and stay close to home"), and can help feed children in poor families.

But Bolivia's government, led by anti-imperialist president Evo Morales, says the South American nation already produces 197 million chickens annually, and has the capacity to export 36 million. Bolivia's pride is justified: the country's economy has nearly tripled in size over the last decade, with its GDP per capita jumping from $1,200 in 2006 to $3,119 in 2015. The IMF predicts that Bolivia's economy will grow by 3.8 percent in 2016, making it the best performer in South America.

Minister Cocarico told reporters in the country's capital La Paz that Gates should "inform himself that us Bolivians have a lot of production and do not need any gifted chicks in order to live, we have dignity." He added: "It think it's rude coming from a magnate that does not know Bolivia's reality." Well, he certainly knows now.

By now you've probably heard of bisphenol-A (BPA), the chemical added to plastics to make them soft. I have written about it before here, here and here. Many manufacturers are going "BPA-free" to make you think their products are safe. But they are still using bisphenol. They're just using a different form.

They're using the "s" form (bisphenol-S), which is still dangerous.

BPS has already been found to cause abnormal brain changes in zebra fish, which share 80 percent of their DNA with humans. Now, new UCLA research shows BPS speeds up embryonic development and disrupts the reproductive system. BPS altered the animals' physiology at the embryonic stage in as quickly as 25 hours.

The other horrifying discovery by the UCLA team is that both bisphenols act partly through fooling estrogen receptors, but also partly through a thyroid hormone system to exert their effects.

To offset these chemicals, use a little bit of clove oil each day. The compound called eugenol helps keep your body from absorbing these chemicals.

Wife Tries to Poison Husband Through His Underwear [feedly]

Wife Tries to Poison Husband Through His Underwear
// Neatorama

Plenty of wives have tried to poison their husbands over the years, but when Mrs. Zhang decided to take care of her matrimonial problem, she didn't want to go the traditional method of poisoning her husband's food. Instead she soaked her husband's underwear in herbicide before he wore the briefs to his daughter's wedding.

I can't say if Mrs. Zhang wanted to kill her husband or just teach him a lesson, but her husband did survive. Unfortunately for Mr. Zhang, he didn't get treatment until he noticed his genitals were "rotting." He has since recovered from his injuries and no one knows if he yet plans to file charges.
