Watch: How the DNC really feels about 'sensible' gun laws
// Personal Liberty Digest™
Former retail executive Bonnie Schaefer, a member of the Democratic National Committee's 15-person platform committee, thinks the 2nd Amendment ought to be abolished outright.
According to the progressive, it isn't enough for the Democratic Party to push policies aimed at keeping firearms away from criminals and the mentally ill— she wants a total firearm ban in the United States.
Why? Well, it's her personal belief that nothing good ever happens when a firearm is around.
"I really don't personally think anyone should have a gun," she said.
"That's just my own, you know, philosophy. Nothing is ever solved when you have a gun in your hand except the worst possible scenario."
There are millions of American outdoorsmen and shooting sport enthusiasts who would disagree.
And taking a long view of history, there are also plenty of people who've perished at the hands of tyranny after being systematically disarmed by regimes who also claimed there was no need to hang on to weapons for self-defense.
People like Schaefer and non-journalist Katie Couric can pretend that gun owners are a stupid lot, prone to violent outbursts and homicidal rampages, all they want. But it only serves to raise serious questions about their own intelligence.
There are plenty of available statistics that betray their attempts to link gun ownership increases to violent crime rates.
And the U.S.'s relatively unique right to bear arms was conceived by intelligent statesmen, business leaders and thinkers who believed the "worst possible scenario" would be defenselessness against assaults on the natural rights of man by agenda-driven powerbrokers and zealots.
What people like Schaefer and Couric have to gain by taking away that insurance policy is anyone's guess. Most likely, their attitudes toward firearms are a reactionary consequence of insulation from life in the real world and a desire to create some utopian liberal society that will never exist on this planet.
The rest of us see reality. Some of us drive to work through bad neighborhoods decimated by Democratic policies. We know that criminals don't obey laws no matter how badly liberals may want to pretend they will. We know the world is a dangerous place. And, like the nation's founders, we cherish each and every tool, skill and preparation that can make it less so for ourselves and our loved ones. A firearm and proper training could at any moment become the only thing between life and the "worst possible scenario"— that is not paranoia, it is practicality.
