If Hillary Clinton makes it into the White House, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange says Americans are in store for an era of "neo-McCarthyism," complete with major new restrictions on internet speech.
During an interview on Sean Hannity's conservative talk radio program, Assange said the Clinton campaign is attempting to use the U.S.'s long complicated relations with Russia to its benefit.
"What we're seeing now is Hillary Clinton and her campaign trying to whip up a neo-McCarthyist hysteria where she claims that, effectively, Donald Trump is an agent of the Russians, that WikiLeaks is an agent of the Russians, and where her campaign has also implied that Jill Stein, the Greens leader, is a Russian agent, and that the Intercept, another U.S. publication, effectively [all] Russian agents," Assange said.
WikiLeaks has created many headaches for the Clinton campaign by publishing all of the former top diplomat's released State Department emails in a searchable online database.
Clinton's efforts to portray any person or organization exposing wrongdoing on her part as a foreign agent, Assange predicts, is going to have a chilling effect on reporting and free speech.
"We have the ruling party … running around, calling the opposition leader, in fact multiple opposition readers, and the critical press, foreign agents," he said. "What kind of press climate is going to exist afterwards, especially if Hillary Clinton is elected? It will be perceived to be a validation of that hysteria."
"So the press afterwards will be cracked down upon, and online publishers, and people on social media," he continued. "It will lead to a very harsh climate where the First Amendment will be eroded."
Assange went on to note that the Clinton campaign and Democratic Party have already had much success in manipulating the media, as evidenced by the leaked DNC emails published on the WikiLeaks website.
"Democrat aligned-media like MSNBC, Politico, Washington Post, we expose as acting against journalistic ethics, taking marching orders from the DNC, checking, in the case of Politico, checking their copy with the DNC before even their own editors get to see it," he said.
That's why, he added, it's important for "whistleblowers, consultants, and yes, even computer hackers who care about the truth" to have a place like WikiLeaks to publish information for the masses.
